We talk about saving the environment in Episode 11 of Trends. Vivi Sirporn Sriaram, Co-Founder of Blue Renaissance and Technical Project Coordinator at the United Nations Development Program, stands at the forefront of a global movement to safeguard our environment and oceans.
Vivi, scientist and a climate change activist, is championing the 30X30 Global Coalition in Thailand. The bold 30X30 Global Coalition is an ambitious initiative urging governments worldwide to designate 30% of Earth's land and ocean areas as protected zones by 2030. 30X30 already has the support of over 115 countries, indigenous leaders, philanthropists, UN entities, scientists and economists, and in Thailand Vivi is a vocal advocate for the preservation and restoration of our coastal ecosystems.
The landmark decision in December 2022, wherein the Convention on Biodiversity included the 30 by 30 target in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, marked a significant step toward achieving this global vision. The High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People, the Global Ocean Alliance, and the Leaders Pledge for Nature have united nations in a collective effort to protect our planet's invaluable biodiversity.
Yet, Vivi's work extends beyond policy advocacy and international cooperation, she is confronting the plastic menace. With a deep understanding of the immediate threats facing our oceans, Vivi has been a stalwart defender against the pervasive issue of plastic pollution. Drawing attention to the alarming statistics, she notes that over 430 million tons of plastic are produced annually, two-thirds of which becomes waste after just one use.
The ocean, a vital source of life for our planet, is under siege as eleven million metric tons of plastics enter its waters each year. The current trajectory, as per data from the Ocean Conservatory, paints a grim picture - more plastic than fish in the ocean by mid-century. Vivi, through her work on the Marine Plastics and Coastal Communities project at IUCN, has been instrumental in orchestrating solutions to beat plastic pollution.
Vivi's dedication to conservation is evident in her role as Co-founder and Managing Director at Blue Renaissance Company. The organization, based in Bangkok, provides technical, coordination and consultancy support on conservation and sustainability projects, with a core mission to protect and restore coastal ecosystems. Vivi's thorough and efficient approach has yielded positive outcomes, from circular economy partnership projects to policy coordination and knowledge product creation.
Her exemplary efforts on the monitoring and evaluation of projects, coupled with her ability to forge meaningful partnerships, have contributed significantly to Thailand's environmental initiatives. Vivi's work reflects a holistic understanding of the intricate balance between human activities and the ecosystems we depend on for our livelihoods.
To join Vivi and her partners in the fight for a sustainable future, you can find a hub of like-minded individuals on her Facebook page, "Taskforce For Nature Volunteers (Thailand)" / 30x30thailandcoalition This virtual community serves as a rallying point for those who share a common vision of safeguarding our planet for future generations.
In a world grappling with environmental challenges, Vivi emerges as a symbol of hope and a catalyst for change. Through her tireless efforts, she beckons us to recognize the urgency of our actions and embrace a shared responsibility to protect the Earth's fragile ecosystems. In the heart of Thailand, a conservationist's call echoes globally, urging us to stand together for the sake of our planet and its inhabitants.
